Salt treatment inhibits cell death, enhances disease resistance in ceramide kinase mutants

Sphingolipids are major structural components of cell’s membrane and dynamic regulators of basic cellular, developmental and defence processes in plants. Research advancements show that sphingolipids are significant molecules in plants and the genes in their biosynthesis pathway have been identified and characterized. There is also an interplay between abiotic or biotic stress and programmed cell death as recent studies indicate.
The characterization of an Arabidopsis thaliana cell-death mutant, accelerated cell death5 (acd5), lacking the ceramide kinase displays spontaneous programmed cell death late in the development. The loss of ceramide kinase in Arabidopsis impairs defenses and promotes ceramide accumulation and mitochondrial H2O2 bursts. It was observed that salt treatments to these mutants inhibits cell death and prevents the accumulation of sphingolipids. The effect of NaCl was partly dependent on the antagonistic interaction between endogenous SA and ABA. Furthermore, pre-treatment with salt also enhanced the resistance response to biotic stress, independent to pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered immune response.
