Transgenerational Heat Stress Memory

 

 

Global warming has lead to increase in average temperature of the earth, thus negatively affecting all life forms. Owing to the sessile nature, plants have evolved mechanisms to respond to the variations in temperature. Research has shown that there is early flowering phenotype and inhibition of post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) in Arabidopsis at high temperatures (30⁰C). This heat induced early flowering and PTGS release is transgenerationally inherited in the progeny for at least two generations with rapidly declining strength. The pathway is epigenetically regulated and involves inhibited biosynthesis of tasiRNAs. This leads to upregulation of HTT5 (HEAT-INDUCED TAS1 TARGET 5) which drives early flowering. This mechanism maintains transgenerational heat stress memory thereby ensuring reproductive success under stress. The heat induced accelerated flowering has been observed in many other plants, including rice. It would be interesting to determine whether the same mechanism is utilized in other plant species as well.
